Vacancy and Category Analysis

Category Vacancies % of Total
UR (Unreserved) 4,860 43.7%
OBC (NCL) 2,598 23.4%
SC 1,746 15.7%
EWS 1,004 9.0%
ST 919 8.3%
Ex-Servicemen (included in above) 1,115
Total 11,127 100%

With 4,860 UR seats forming the largest block at 43.7%, General category candidates face the highest absolute competition, but OBC (NCL) candidates are in an advantageous position: 2,598 reserved seats represent nearly one in four vacancies, and OBC candidates clearing the exam under UR norms (without taking any relaxation) can additionally compete for UR seats. SC candidates have 1,746 reserved seats – a meaningful share given that the notification covers 21 RRBs spread across all railway zones. The EWS quota at 1,004 seats is significant; candidates in this category must ensure their Income and Asset Certificate is valid as on 14 June 2026 and covers Financial Year 2025–26.

The RRB with the highest total vacancy is Mumbai (Central Railway) at 1,078, making it the most competitive choice. Bhubaneswar (ECoR) follows with 801. Smaller RRBs like Trivandrum (64 posts) and Muzaffarpur (42 posts) carry fewer openings but also draw proportionally fewer applicants. Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) are not suitable for this post as stated in Annexure A – no PwBD vacancies are reserved under this CEN. Ex-Servicemen vacancies (1,115) are horizontal reservations included within the total – they are not additional posts.

Salary and In-Hand Calculation

Component Approximate Amount
Basic Pay (Level-2, 7th CPC) ₹19,900
Dearness Allowance (DA @ ~53% of Basic) ~₹10,547
House Rent Allowance (HRA – X city 24%, Y city 16%, Z city 8%) ~₹4,776 / ₹3,184 / ₹1,592
Transport Allowance (TA – Level 1–2) ~₹1,350 + DA
Gross Approximate (Y-city) ~₹35,000–₹36,000
NPS Deduction (~10% of Basic) ~₹1,990
CGHS/CGEGIS/Other deductions ~₹500–₹1,000
Estimated In-Hand (Y/Z city) ~₹21,000–₹26,000 per month
DA rate used above is an approximate figure based on 7th CPC norms applicable at the time of this notification. Actual gross and in-hand figures will vary by city class and DA revision. Candidates are advised to treat these as indicative estimates only and verify from the official pay matrix.

Beyond salary, ALP is a gazetted Group C post with free railway pass benefits, medical facilities under RELHS, and career progression to Loco Pilot (Goods), Loco Pilot (Mail/Express), and eventually Senior Loco Pilot. Compared to SSC CHSL (Level-2 posts at ₹19,900 basic), the ALP post offers equivalent basic pay but with railway-specific perquisites like subsidised housing and pass entitlement for family travel – an advantage not available in most central secretariat roles.

Application Fee

Category Fee Refund on Appearing in CBT-1
General / OBC / EWS (Male) ₹500 ₹400 refunded (bank charges deducted)
SC / ST / Ex-Servicemen / Female / Transgender / Minorities / EBC ₹250 Full ₹250 refunded (bank charges deducted)

Payment is accepted through online mode only – internet banking, debit/credit cards, or UPI. A critical mistake specific to this portal: the refund is processed only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar. Candidates who have not linked a bank account to their Aadhaar must do so before applying, or provide a family member’s Aadhaar-seeded account – failure to do this means the refund cannot be processed.

Age Limit

Category Min Age Max Age (as on 01-07-2026) Relaxation
UR / EWS 18 years 30 years Nil
OBC (NCL) 18 years 33 years +3 years
SC / ST 18 years 35 years +5 years
Serving Railway Staff (UR/EWS, 3+ yrs) 40 years Up to 40 yrs
Widowed / Divorced Women (UR/EWS) 35 years Up to 35 yrs

Age calculation example: For a UR candidate, date of birth must fall between 02-07-1996 and 01-07-2008 (both inclusive). An OBC (NCL) candidate’s date of birth must be on or after 02-07-1993. Only the maximum applicable relaxation applies – relaxations are not cumulative.

Eligibility Criteria

Route Minimum Qualification Accepted Trades/Streams
Route A Matriculation/SSLC + ITI (NCVT/SCVT) Fitter, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Mechanic (Diesel), Wireman, Instrument Mechanic, Machinist, Turner, Heat Engine, Armature & Coil Winder, Tractor Mechanic, Refrigeration & AC Mechanic, Millwright/Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic (Radio & TV)
Route A (Alt) Matriculation/SSLC + Course Completed Act Apprenticeship Same trades as ITI list above
Route B Matriculation/SSLC + 3-Year Diploma in Engineering Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Automobile (or combination streams)
Route B (Alt) Degree in Engineering (above disciplines) Degree acceptable in lieu of Diploma

The most common eligibility mistake for ALP: candidates with a Diploma in Computer Science or Civil Engineering assume it qualifies – it does not. Only Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, and Automobile disciplines (and their combination streams) are accepted under Route B. Final year students must not apply – the notification explicitly states that candidates awaiting results are ineligible. Equivalent qualifications are accepted (Degree in lieu of Diploma), but the trade or engineering discipline must match the prescribed list exactly.

Selection Process

Stage 1: CBT-1 (First Stage Computer Based Test)

CBT-1 is a 60-minute screening exam with 75 questions covering Mathematics, Mental Ability, and General Science (10th standard level). There is 1/3rd negative marking per wrong answer. Minimum qualifying marks are 40% for UR/EWS, 30% for OBC/SC, and 25% for ST. Marks from CBT-1 do not count in the final panel – it only shortlists candidates (15x vacancies) for CBT-2. Focus on speed and accuracy in Mental Ability, as it typically separates candidates in this stage.

Stage 2: CBT-2 (Second Stage Computer Based Test)

CBT-2 runs for 2.5 hours with 175 questions split into Part-A (100 questions, 90 minutes – merit-based) and Part-B (75 questions, 60 minutes – qualifying only at 35% for all categories). Only Part-A marks are used for shortlisting; Part-B tests trade/technical knowledge from your ITI or engineering discipline. Candidates with Diploma/Degree must select one applicable trade from the prescribed list – check the DGT website for the specific syllabus of your chosen trade before Part-B preparation.

Stage 3: CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test)

CBAT shortlists 8x vacancies per category from CBT-2 Part-A ranks. There is no negative marking in CBAT. Every test battery within CBAT must be cleared separately with a minimum T-score of 42. Candidates must bring their Self Screening Medical Declaration Report (Annexure VIIIA and VIIIB, signed by a General Physician and Eye Specialist from a Government hospital) on CBAT day.

Stage 4: Document Verification and Medical Examination

Final merit is derived 50% from CBT-2 Part-A and 50% from CBAT scores. Medical Examination applies A-1 standards – no alternative posting is given to candidates who fail medical. Produce all original documents on DV day; no extra time is granted.

Your first 7 days after applying:

  1. Save your Registration Number and keep your registered mobile and email active for the entire recruitment cycle
  2. Link a valid bank account to your Aadhaar immediately for fee refund after CBT-1
  3. Download and read the syllabus for your specific ITI trade or engineering discipline from the DGT website (dgt.gov.in)
  4. Book a vision test at a government hospital – if your unaided vision is below 6/6, check eligibility before investing further
  5. Choose your RRB carefully based on Annexure B vacancy numbers and your preferred zone – this choice cannot be changed after submission

3 rejection mistakes specific to RRB ALP applications:

  • Signature in capital/block letters: ALP applications are rejected at any stage if the signature is not in running cursive handwriting – even after the exam is cleared
  • Attempting to upload a pre-existing photograph: The system requires a live capture – submitting a picture of a printed photo is detected and results in immediate rejection
  • Submitting multiple applications to different RRBs: All applications from that candidate are summarily rejected and the candidate is debarred from all future RRB/RRC exams
